Old Glory isn't the only nickname that American's call their beloved flag, however the other common nicknames are easily explainable.

The other nickname, “The Star-Spangled Banner”, is from America's national anthem, which was derived from a poem written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 called "Defense of Fort McHenry."
